Breathing techniques

All the main types of breathing techniques - each with its rhythm, uses, evidence and a hold-free alternative - and how to pick the one that fits.

Breathing techniques are structured ways of pacing the breath - how long you inhale, exhale, and sometimes hold. Most of the well-known ones are variations of slow breathing: box breathing uses four equal phases, 4-7-8 stretches the hold and exhale, resonant breathing settles near 5-6 breaths a minute, extended-exhale breathing simply lengthens the out-breath, and the physiological sigh is a quick double-inhale reset. Belly (diaphragmatic) breathing is the low, relaxed way of breathing that underlies all of them.

There are more names than there are ideas: nearly every calming technique combines just three ingredients - a slower pace, a longer exhale, and an optional hold. That means you do not need to learn a list; you need one or two patterns that fit the moment you reach for them.

How to choose a technique

  • To wind down for sleep: an extended exhale (4 in, 6-8 out) or 4-7-8 if holds feel fine.
  • To steady yourself before something demanding: box breathing or equal breathing.
  • For a fast reset mid-stress: two or three physiological sighs.
  • For a daily baseline practice: resonant breathing at about 5-6 breaths a minute.
  • If you are brand new or dislike holds: belly breathing with a relaxed, slightly longer exhale - or plain slow breathing.

All of these should feel comfortable. If a technique makes you dizzy or anxious - most often one with holds - switch to a hold-free pattern and see the safety pages below.
