Slow breathing: what it is, benefits and how to practice
Slow breathing means deliberately breathing well below your normal resting rate - typically around four to ten breaths a minute, with five to six the most studied pace. It is the common ingredient behind most calming techniques: box breathing, 4-7-8, resonant breathing and extended-exhale breathing are all slow breathing in different shapes.
Slow breathing is the umbrella, not one more technique to memorize. Pick any comfortable slow pattern - the pace and a relaxed exhale do the work.

Adults at rest breathe about 12-16 times a minute. Slow-paced breathing usually means 4-10 breaths a minute; around 5 to 5.5 is the pace research returns to most, and a slightly longer exhale often feels the most settling.
How to practice slow breathing
- Sit comfortably and breathe lowLet the breath sit in the belly rather than the upper chest.
- Slow down graduallyAim for roughly 4 seconds in and 6 out, or an even 5-5. Do not jump straight to the slowest pace you can manage.
- Keep it small and relaxedSlow does not mean deep. Big, forceful breaths are the most common mistake - keep the breath quiet.
- Continue for a few minutesThe settling effect builds over two to five minutes rather than arriving on the first breath.

Slow breathing benefits: what the evidence suggests
Reviews of slow-breathing research associate paces around six breaths a minute with increased heart-rate variability, a shift toward parasympathetic (rest) activity, and self-reported relaxation. Effects are real but gentle, and they vary between people.[1][3][2]

Is slow breathing bad for you?
For most people, gentle slow breathing is among the safest wellbeing practices there is. Discomfort usually comes from overdoing it: breathing too deeply (which can cause light-headedness from overbreathing), or forcing a pace that is too slow too soon, which creates air hunger. Slowing your breath on purpose for a few minutes is also not the same as a chronically low resting rate - if your normal breathing feels slow, effortful or breathless without trying, that is a question for a clinician, not a breathing exercise.
Beginner version
Start at about 8-10 breaths a minute - for example 3 in, 4 out - and slow down over a week or two of short practices. Comfort is the pace-setter; the studied numbers are a direction, not a requirement.
