How slow breathing works: the physiology in plain language
Slow breathing - roughly five to seven breaths a minute - can nudge the nervous system toward a calmer state. Slowing the breath, especially the exhale, increases activity in the vagus nerve and the parasympathetic "rest and digest" branch, which is associated with a lower heart rate and greater heart-rate variability.
The effect is real, modest, and worth understanding without hype. It is a tool for everyday regulation, not a treatment.
The mechanism
When you breathe slowly, and especially when the exhale is longer than the inhale, activity in the vagus nerve increases. The vagus nerve is the main pathway of the parasympathetic nervous system, which slows the heart and supports a settled state. Breathing near about six breaths a minute also lines up the natural rise and fall of heart rate with the breath, an effect called respiratory sinus arrhythmia. [2]

Common misconceptions
- "It resets your nervous system." Slow breathing gently shifts the balance; it does not reset anything.
- "More is always better." Forcing very deep or very slow breaths can cause light-headedness.
- "It is a cure for anxiety." It is a helpful tool, not a treatment for any condition.
