Heart-rate variability (HRV) and breathing
Heart-rate variability (HRV) is the natural variation in time between heartbeats. It changes with the breath - rising on the inhale and falling on the exhale - and slow breathing at about six breaths a minute tends to increase it. Higher HRV is generally associated with a more flexible, rested nervous system.
HRV is a useful window into how breathing affects the body, but it is one signal among many and not a health score.
The mechanism
The heart naturally speeds up slightly on the inhale and slows on the exhale - a pattern called respiratory sinus arrhythmia. Slow breathing exaggerates this rhythm and, near about six breaths a minute, produces the largest swings, which shows up as higher heart-rate variability. [2]

Practical implications
If you enjoy HRV feedback, slow breathing near six breaths a minute is the pace most likely to raise it. But you do not need to track HRV to benefit from a calmer breath.
Common misconceptions
- "Higher HRV is always better." HRV is a signal, not a score; context matters.
- "Breathing permanently raises HRV." The clearest effect is during and shortly after slow breathing.
