How Adaptive Breathing works
Adaptive Breathing is BreathMate's approach of adjusting a session's pace to how your body responds, rather than using one fixed pattern for everyone. It watches the steadiness of your breathing and, on Apple Watch, heart-rate signals, and makes small, explainable changes - usually easing toward a longer, calmer exhale.
Fixed patterns treat everyone the same. Adaptive Breathing finds the version of a calming breath that fits you today.
What adapts, and how
- The pace - how long each inhale and exhale lasts.
- The exhale-to-inhale ratio - nudged longer on the out-breath as you settle.
- The length - a session can wind down gradually rather than stopping abruptly.
The changes are small and explainable: you can always see Why Now? behind a recommendation, and some techniques (like box breathing and 4-7-8) are deliberately never reshaped, because their fixed ratios are the technique.
Where it stays within limits
Every rhythm stays inside safe, comfortable bounds, and personalization runs on your device. Adaptive Breathing is about comfort and fit, not pushing you toward harder breathing.
