Respirare quando non riesci a dormire o ti svegli alle 3 di notte
When you cannot sleep or you wake in the night, slow breathing with a long exhale - done lying down, in the dark - eases the racing mind and lets sleep come on its own. It will not force sleep, and trying to make it happen backfires; let the long exhale relax you and be willing to just rest.
Permission to rest, not a demand to sleep. A long exhale or 4-7-8, lying still, is the gentlest option.
What to try
- A long-exhale breath (4 in, 6-8 out), lying on your back or side.
- 4-7-8 if you like a light hold; keep it gentle and unforced.
Fast option
Ten slow breaths with the exhale twice as long as the inhale, eyes closed, without checking the clock.
Longer option
A silent Apple Watch session in the dark, so you can follow the rhythm by feel without a bright screen.
What to avoid
- Bright screens and checking the time - both wake you further.
- Trying hard to fall asleep; aim to rest, and let sleep arrive.
Evidence and limitations
Slow breathing before bed improves some sleep measures and lowers pre-sleep arousal. Evidence for mid-night waking specifically is thin - treat it as a way to rest calmly, and see a doctor if insomnia is persistent.[1]
Safety
If you regularly cannot sleep, or wake unrefreshed for weeks, talk to a doctor - ongoing insomnia has treatable causes that breathing alone will not fix.
In the app
A sleep session runs longer and slows toward the end; on Apple Watch it is silent, so it will not wake you further.
