Box breathing vs 4-7-8: which should you use?
Box breathing (4-4-4-4) is even and steadying, good for focus and composure; 4-7-8 has a much longer exhale and hold, which makes it a wind-down toward sleep. Box breathing has lighter holds and is a little easier; 4-7-8 has the longest hold of the two. If you dislike holds, prefer a hold-free technique instead.

Holds, pacing and difficulty
Box breathing has two light four-second holds; 4-7-8 has a single seven-second hold, which is the longest of the common techniques and the main reason it feels harder.
Safety differences
Because 4-7-8 has a longer hold, it is more likely to feel like air hunger. Anyone prone to panic, or with a heart or respiratory condition, should be cautious with either and prefer a hold-free option.
Evidence comparison
Neither technique has strong evidence of its own. Both are best understood through the broader research on slow breathing, where gentle shifts toward relaxation and higher heart-rate variability are reported.[1]
