Enter your age and see a rough estimate of how many breaths you have taken so far - and how many an average lifetime holds.

A back-of-the-envelope estimate at a steady 15 breaths a minute - real breathing speeds up and slows down all day, so treat the numbers as perspective, not measurement.

How many breaths does the average person take?

At a resting pace of about 15 breaths a minute, a person takes roughly 21,600 breaths a day, around 7.9 million a year, and on the order of 600 to 700 million breaths over an 80-year lifetime. Those are the numbers this calculator scales to your age.

The assumptions behind the estimate

The formula is: breaths per minute × 60 minutes × 24 hours × 365.25 days × years. We assume a steady 15 breaths a minute - the middle of the typical adult resting range of 12 to 16. Real breathing is never steady: it speeds up with exercise and stress, slows in deep sleep, and children breathe considerably faster than adults. So the true number for any life has a wide range - treat every figure here as perspective, not measurement.

Measure your own rate

The single biggest variable is your own resting rate. You can estimate it in 30 seconds with the breathing rate calculator and enter it above for a more personal estimate.

Making some of them count

Almost all of those millions of breaths happen without you noticing - which is exactly why taking a few on purpose stands out. That idea is what BreathMate's Mindful Breaths are: conscious breaths that add to a lifetime count that only grows. Read more about how many breaths people take in a lifetime.
