생리적 한숨: 두 번 들이쉬어 빠르게 안정을 되찾는 법

A physiological sigh is a double inhale - a normal breath in, then a second short sip on top - followed by a long, slow exhale. Research suggests a few of these in a row can lower arousal quickly, making it a handy in-the-moment reset.

The rhythm3 · 2 · 7 · ≈ 12s

It is a natural pattern your body already does. A few rounds is enough; it is not meant to be a long practice.

The rhythm

Rhythm: 3 · 2 · 7 (one cycle ≈ 12s)
Breathing phases in seconds
PhaseSeconds
Inhale3s
Inhale (top-up)2s
Exhale7s

A full inhale, a short top-up inhale, then a long exhale. Repeat one to three times.

How to do it

  1. Inhale through the nose
    A normal, comfortable breath in.
  2. Add a second short inhale
A small sip on top to fill the lungs.
  3. Long, slow exhale
Let it out slowly through the mouth. Repeat one to three times.

Common uses

  • A fast reset when stress spikes.
  • Taking the edge off a wave of anxiety.
  • A quick pause between tasks.

What the evidence suggests

Evidence: Moderate support

A 2023 controlled study found that five minutes of daily cyclic sighing improved mood and lowered respiratory rate more than mindfulness meditation over one month. It is promising early evidence from one study - not a cure-all.[1]

Safety

A gentle, hold-free technique. Keep the breaths comfortable rather than gasping the second inhale.

Beginner version

One round - double inhale, long exhale - is a complete practice. Add a couple more if you like.

How BreathMate implements it

BreathMate guides the double-inhale timing so you get the pattern right without counting.
