어려운 대화를 앞두고 하는 호흡

Before a difficult conversation, a minute of slow breathing with a longer exhale can cool the physical heat of confrontation so you respond instead of react. If you feel yourself flare mid-talk, one quiet slow exhale before you speak buys a beat.

The goal is composed, not detached. A longer exhale calms the body enough to stay present and choose your words.

What to try

  • An extended-exhale breath (4 in, 6 out) to take down the heat.
  • Coherent breathing (about 5.5 breaths a minute) for a longer settle.

Fast option

One slow, quiet exhale before you speak - especially if you feel yourself flaring.

Longer option

A few minutes of slow breathing beforehand, so you arrive already steadier.

What to avoid

  • Holding your breath - it tends to lock in tension.
  • Using breathing to swallow a point you need to make; it is for composure, not silence.

Evidence and limitations

Evidence: Early or limited evidence

Slow breathing lowers physiological arousal and supports emotion regulation. Whether it changes the outcome of a particular conversation is not something studies measure - it helps you stay composed, not win an argument.[1]

Safety

In the app

A short calm session beforehand, or a silent Watch session you can run discreetly while you wait.
